Smith Takes Cycling Season Opener

Jan. 13, 2009 – The 2009 Virgin Islands Cycling Federation season opened with the traditional Anything Goes race. The race, which is unique to St. Croix, includes only starting and finishing locations, with the routes between to be determined by each individual rider.
It started on Sunday on the North Shore Road at the base of the LaValle Hill, and finished at the north end of Emancipation Drive in Frederiksted. Road riders, mountain bikers and cyclocross bikes all graced the starting line. In 2008 the race was won on a road bike, and this year, mountain bikers were anxious to take back the crown.
Thirty-two riders started, with the majority heading for the Beast. Tim Smith was the only mountain biker who was able to keep up with the roadies at the top of the climb, and he turned west on Scenic Road with a one-minute lead over fellow dirt riders John Riggs and Tom Guthrie. Smith continued to open up his lead on the course, which featured over 1000 vertical feet of climbing, and won easily in a new race record of 38:31. Riggs held on for second place in 40:42, with Guthrie third in 43:20. Jonathan Cruz and Apolinar Acevedo were the first skinny-tire finishers, in fifth and sixth respectively, in 45:13.
The next race will be the East End Time Trial on Jan. 18, starting at 7 a.m., at Chicken Charlie's.
