Reichhold Seeks Vendors for Playing Ring Marketplace

Jan. 9, 2009 – The Reichhold Center for the Arts seeks vendors to participate in its annual Playing Ring Marketplace, which will be held at 6 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 31. Vendors selling traditional arts and crafts, native foods and traditional drinks are encouraged to participate. Applications are available through Tasida Kelch at the V.I. Council on the Arts office, 774-5984.
Following the marketplace, the Playing Ring performances will start at 8 p.m. and will feature Stanley and the 10 Sleepless Knights, Milo's Kings, Lashing Dogs and the St. Croix Heritage Dancers. Narrators and music will be used to demonstrate how each band was influenced by the changing social, political and artistic fabric of the 1940s, 50s and 60s in the Virgin Islands and the United States. Playing Ring will also show how quelbe music evolved to include Latin, calypso, R&B and other influences.
Tickets are $42, $28 and $18 and are available at Modern Music, VI Bridal and Tuxedo, Urban Threadz, Island Video (Nisky), Home Again (Red Hook), UVI Bookstore and the Riechhold box office at 693-1559.
