Jan. 7, 2009 – Education Commissioner Dr. La Verne Terry issued congratulations to the newly installed members of the 16th elected Virgin Islands Board of Education following Monday’s ceremony saying, “It gives me great pleasure to offer greetings and congratulations to the members of the 16th elected VI Board of Education. The leadership and staff of the Department of Education pledges it support and assistance to you all in the spirit of collaboration and in the name of the children of this territory.
“There is a new energy in our midst as we engage a community toward our vision to provide all students, with access to rigorous and relevant learning opportunities that enables them to successfully live and compete in the global society. This vision is one that cannot be accomplished without the collaboration, cooperation and vigilance of all stakeholders of public education. As the Board is the entity responsible for providing a program of public education, and the Department, responsible for promoting the cause of education; both entities have a fiduciary responsibility to each public school student, their parents, teachers, administrators and other staff to maintain control and management of the schools,” she further added.
“I look forward to a continued positive working relationship with members of the Board and its Executive Director in a manner that will bring about positive change for the public education system in the territory."
The commissioner, who was unable to attend the ceremony, issued her statement from the mainland where she was caring for her ailing father, who has since passed. In her absence Dr. Frett-Gregory is serving as the acting commissioner.
