Alert: Sewage Flowing on Ground in Christiansted Housing Community

Jan. 7, 2009 — A broken pipeline has resulted in sewage coming out of the ground in the JFK Housing Community in Christiansted, and people should avoid the area — especially children and adults with compromised immune systems.
The LBJ Pump Station has failed, creating a "sizable hole in the ground behing Building 14" in the community, according to a news release from the Department of Planning and Natural Resources' Division of Environmental Protection.
"As a result, sewage is flowing on the grounds from the point of the failed section, then into the storm drain and gutters," the release said. "Currently, the LBJ Station is offline as WMA contractor GEC is assessing the area."
People should avoid "the areas around the affected force main and guts," as well as beaches affected by the sewage spill, the release said. "Standing or running water in these areas may contain contaminants or pollutants harmful to human health."
