USVI Boxing Federation Competes in Mexico

Nov. 5, 2008 – U.S. Virgin Islands Boxing Federation officials and two boxers attended the first Youth World Boxing Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico. Boxers Lavan Maddox and Clayton Laurent Jr. were among 359 top athletes from 68 countries.
Fifteen-year-old Lavan Maddox lost to Hungary in the 51 kg division, and 18-year-old Clayton Laurent Jr. lost to the U.S.A. Laurent eventually became the only gold medalist for the United States, in the 91+ kg division. Both boxers are being groomed to participate in the 2012 Olympics.
Along with Maddox and Laurent, 16 other boxers from the V.I. will be participating in an invitational tournament in Vieques, Puerto Rico, on Nov. 15.
