Bush Declares Disaster in V.I.

President George Bush issued a declaration of major disaster in the Virgin Islands as a result of Hurricane Omar Wednesday, according to a release from the office of Governor John deJongh, Jr.
The presidential declaration orders federal aid to supplement ongoing recovery efforts.
“I am grateful to the president for his action on my administration’s request for this declaration, which will now provide federal funding to the Virgin Islands government and certain non-profit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and repair or replacement of facilities damaged by Hurricane Omar,” deJongh said.
Funding will also become available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures for all islands in the territory. DeJongh has directed VITEMA Director Mark A. Walters to coordinate the public assistance that will be required for the Virgin Islands with FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Marianne C. Jackson.
Damage surveys are continuing in other areas and other forms of assistance may be designated after the assessments are fully completed, according to FEMA.
DeJongh and Lt. Governor Gregory R. Francis are scheduled to be updated on the ongoing St. Croix recovery efforts Thursday.
