Alert: Health Department Warns Restaurants of Food Risks

Oct. 16, 2008 — Restaurant operators should take care not to serve contaminated food after Hurricane Omar, Health Commissioner Vivian I. Ebbesen-Fludd announced Thursday.
"Perishable foods including meat, poultry, fish, eggs and leftovers that have been above 40 degrees Fahrenheit for two hours or more should be discarded," according to a news release from the Department of Health. "Food that may have come in contact with flood or storm water and have an unusual odor, color or texture should also be thrown away."
Staff from the department's Environmental Health Division will conduct routine inspections of restaurants to make sure these rules are followed to prevent consumers from being placed at risk.
