Brief: LeVar Burton Joins In Non-Violence Initiative

Aug. 29, 2008 — Actor, director and producer LeVar Burton ("Roots," "Star Trek: The Next Generation") will come together on St. Croix this weekend with Cheryl Francis, wife of Lt. Gov. Gregory Francis, the Department of Human Services and Native American teacher Andrew Soliz to promote non-violence among young adults through the "Stop the Bleeding" initiative.
From Friday through Monday, Burton and Soliz, founder of Sacred Ways Native American teaching center in California, will talk with adolescents at the Youth Rehabilitation Center, V.I. Behavioral Services Girls Cottage, and Queen Louise Home for Children.
Burton has been host and producer of the PBS Emmy award-winning program "Reading Rainbow," and is the president of Eagle National Films. Soliz has an extensive history of working with at-risk youth and families as well as inmates in his native state of California. Sacred Ways instructs youth, adults and families in the fundamental Native American principles of learning from and living with nature.
The "Stop the Bleeding" Foundation functions as a non-profit organization to promote, educate, confront, and foster accountability in the Virgin Islands community against violence toward and abuse of V.I. youth through innovative communication, agency collaboration, and responsible action.
