Stealers Clinch Regular-Season Championship in Bob Owens Slow-Pitch Softball

April 22, 2008 — The Seaborne Stealers looked like world beaters Monday night as they roughed up Speak the Word Ministries 15-5 to claim the Bob Owens Slow-Pitch Softball League's regular-season crown.
The Stealers started slow in the second game of the night played at the D.C. Canegata ballpark, but gradually asserted themselves. They came into the bottom of the fifth inning leading 12-5, which meant they needed to score three runs to enforce the 10-run mercy rule. After getting the first two runs relatively easy to go up 14-5, Eric Flynn delivered a bases-loaded single for the clincher.
The Stealers had 15 runs on 18 hits and three errors, while Speak the Word had five runs on 15 hits and committed three errors. Stealers ace Sam Ramos picked up the win on the hill, while former Stealer Ulric Benjamin got the loss for Speak the Word. Top hitters for the Stealers were Flynn, 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs; Raymond Cintron, 3 for 3 with a home run and one RBI; and Enrique Soto, 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs. For Speak the Word, Norbert Pickering went 2 for 2 with two home runs and two RBIs, while Kareem Dennis went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs.
Cartel 10, Cross Tech 3
In the only other game played Monday night, the Cartel beat Cross Tech 10-3. It was Cartel with 10 runs on 10 hits with two errors, while Cross Tech had three runs on 10 hits and committed three errors. The winning pitcher was James Smith, while Bill Harris picked up the loss for Cross Tech. Top hitters for the Cartel were Wayne Scotland, 2 for 3 with a home run and five RBIs, while Daren Lewis and Smith both went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs.
