Community Tips Trigger Arrests of 10 People on Weapons, Drugs Charges

April 14, 2008 — Information provided by community members has led to the arrests of eight adults and two minors, each charged with two counts of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.
The arrests occurred over the weekend near the Winston Raymo Recreation Center in Hospital Ground and were carried out by officers in the Special Operations Bureau, according to a Police Department news release.
"Police were acting on information that a gun was seen in the area, and were able to confiscate two Glock handguns and an undetermined amount of marijuana," according to VIPD spokeswoman Melody Rames.
Arrested over the weekend were Kevin James, 24; Teishawn Penn, 51; Joel Hazel, 20; Sean Woods, 21; Naeem Simmonds, 28; Roy Vanterpool, 23; Raheem "Donda" Richard, 26; and Jahfari Samuel, 25. Unable to post bail, all eight individuals have been remanded to the Bureau of Corrections.
The two minors, both 17, have been released into the custody of their parents.
