Sept. 13, 2007 –Virgin Islands National Park will hold open houses Tuesday and Wednesday so the public can meet Mark Hardgrove, the new park superintendent, and other members of the management team.
"The public can hear what they have to say concerning their vision for the park," park spokesman Paul Thomas said.
The first open house will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the park's Visitor's Center in Cruz Bay.
The second runs from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Johns Folly Learning Institute.
Thomas said that in addition to Hardgrove, the public will have a chance to meet Law Enforcement Chief Mark Marschall, Maintenance Chief Leon Varlack and Resource Management Chief Rafe Boulon. Elba Richardson, who handles park concessions, will also be at the open house as will Thomas, the interpretive chief.
Hardgrove became park superintendent on Sept. 2 after serving six years as deputy superintendent at the Outer Banks Group of parks in North Carolina: Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Wright Brothers National Monument and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site.
He has worked for the National Park Service since 1972, starting out at the C&O Canal National Historic Park in Maryland before going on to the National Capital Parks group. He moved around to several other parks, including an 11-year stint at San Juan National Historic Site in Puerto Rico.
