Ohio Man Drowns at Honeymoon Bay

Sept. 6, 2007 — An Ohio man drowned Wednesday while snorkeling at Honeymoon Bay on St. John, according to National Park spokesman Paul Thomas.
Mark Moorehead, 52, of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, was on a day sail aboard the St. Thomas-based charter boat New Horizons, Thomas said Thursday. It was anchored within park waters at Honeymoon Bay.
According to a statement from the park, witnesses said Moorehead was in the water approximately 10 to 15 minutes when he called out to a companion. The friend noticed the victim’s lips were blue and he looked fearful.
The witnesses said the friend immediately yelled for help when the victim began floating face down. Crew members from a nearby charter boat responded to the call of distress and transported the victim to shore in a dinghy while performing CPR.
Moorehead was transported to the Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center while life supported efforts continued. He was pronounced dead at the center at approximately 12:25 p.m. The cause of death was listed as drowning.
