Celebration of International Literacy Day

Sept. 6, 2007 – The Rotary Club of St. Croix joins with Commissioner Designee St. Clair Williams and VI Housing Parks and Recreation to celebrate International Literacy Day. Parents are invited to bring children to Limpricht Park, Christiansted (next to Community Bank and across from the Pentheny Building) to hear some wonderful stories on Saturday, Sept. 8.
The commissioner and members of his staff, Rotarians and friends will be reading stories from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be refreshments and entertainment by Willard John and his Mocko Jumbies.
Commissioner Williams said, "Partnering with Rotary Club of St. Croix to celebrate International Literacy Day is a perfect opportunity to bring people back to Limpricht Park. It has been under-utilized for a number of years and we encourage everyone to use our parks." He added that he "hoped that in the very near future Housing Parks and Recreation will join with local musicians to have lunchtime concerts in the park."
"There is nothing like a good book. We hope to share our love of reading with children. This is just the first in a number of literacy projects we have planned for this year," said Rotary Club President Elizabeth Goggins. "We will be holding a Reading Clinic in the late fall, early winter to diagnose an ocular muscular problem that may be the reason a number of our children cannot learn to read. Our club will also be working with other agencies on an adult literacy program, which uses a computer-based program to teach adults how to read."
There will be tables set up for a Book Giveaway where children and adults can come and help themselves to a book or two.
If anyone has any books they would like to donate for the book giveaway they can drop them off at our Rotary meeting at Gertrude's Thursday lunchtime, drop them at Gertrude's after 5 p.m., on Friday or bring them to the park Saturday morning.
