Sept. 4, 2007 — John Woodson Junior High School has been accepted as a candidate for accreditation by the Middle States Association’s Commission on Elementary Schools (MSACE), Department of Education officials say.
The commission sent a letter to the school’s principal, Vaughn Hewitt, indicating Woodson’s application had met its standards, according to a Department of Education news release. The school now enters into a self-study phase of the candidacy process.
The acceptance “is good news for our education family – parents, students, and educators,” said Gary Molloy, insular superintendent of schools for the St. Croix District. “Woodson Junior High starts the 2007-2008 school year on a very positive note, with great encouragement to maintain their high standards and achieve their goals. We congratulate them, and ask the community and school sponsors for their continued support throughout the process.”
Hewitt reflected on the previous year’s hard work.
“I am very pleased at the announcement that we have met Middle States standards to become a candidate for accreditation,” he said, according to the release. “We have worked very hard for this, and we will remain focused and committed to doing what it takes to get through the process successfully.”
Acting Education Commissioner Lynn Spampinato echoed Hewitt’s enthusiasm.
“This is extremely good news for the John Woodson Junior High School, the St. Croix community and the territory’s public-education system,” she said. “Woodson’s candidacy announcement and the prospect of being one of the territory’s first junior/middle schools to be accredited is a testament to the hard work of the school’s administration, faculty, staff, students and community network.”
Woodson joins St. Thomas’ Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School, which began its process early in the 2006-2007 school year, in the quest for accreditation. The remaining eligible schools include Addelita Cancryn, Arthur A. Richards and Elena Christian junior high schools and the Julius E. Sprauve Elementary School on St. John.
