@Work: Morgan Barlas Consulting

Sept. 3, 2007 — There's a new face on the St. John and St. Thomas computer-consulting scene: St. John resident Morgan Barlas came home in March to open his own business.
"My family is here,” he says. “I have a house here, and I wanted to start a business.”
Barlas, 44, likes St. John's small-town environment, where people are quick to say hello and he knows lots of people. He grew up on St. John after his family moved from Boston when he was 7. His mother, June Bell Barlas, published the Tradewinds and St. John Times newspapers.
After Julius E. Sprauve School and a stint of home schooling, he went off to St. Thomas to attend high school at All Saints School and Sts. Peter and Paul School.
Afterward came a year as a waiter at Caneel Bay Resort and five months backpacking around Europe before Barlas headed off to the University of Tennessee. He transferred to Northeastern University in Boston, where he graduated in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He spent most of his college years working on computers.
That led to jobs at Cytyc, Rexa and finally KPMG Consulting in Boston, where he worked for 10 years before he decided to return to St. John.
"I left as a manager in the infrastructure solution group, but I worked my way up,” he says. “I was hands-on.”
His consulting company helps with hardware and software infrastructure development. The business is targeted at commercial accounts such as doctors, dentists, banks, government offices, manufacturing facilities, utilities, and retail outlets, Barlas says: “Point of sale systems." He also tackles home computing infrastructure issues.
Briefcase in hand, Barlas visits offices to solve problems. While he works most on St. John and St. Thomas, he says he's willing to travel to St. Croix — or anywhere else for that matter, if he can help.
When he's not working on his house, visiting his family or snorkeling at one of St. John's beaches, he's out taking photos. "I'm an avid photographer," he says.
