Aug. 31, 2007 — After taking first-innings honors, Anguilla found themselves in a lot of trouble Friday afternoon at 38 for 4 in their second innings as the Combined Virgin Islands fight their way back into this Leeward Islands Cricket Association (LICA) three-day match.
The day at the Owen Schjang Ballpark started with the Combined Virgin Islands (CVI) resuming their first innings on 32 for 1. Some tight bowling by the Anguilla’s bowlers in the morning session, however, saw the CVI squad reduced to 133 for eight by lunch. The slide continued for the CVI on the resumption of play, and they were all out some 15 minutes before tea with a first-inning total of 155, trailing Anguilla’s first inning score of 267 by 112.
Only three CVI batsmen got into the 20s. Philern Davis and Junie Anthony both had knocks of 26, while Huggins chipped in with 21.
The Anguilla bowling attack was led by fast bowler Kellbert Walters, who took three for 25 off seven overs. Vice captain Omari Banks took three wickets for 36 off of 16 overs and Daniel Proctor was two for 24 off of eight overs.
The Anguilla second innings started after tea, and midway through the day’s final session they were in a lot of trouble at 38 for 4, a lead of only 150. The CVI bowlers struck early and often as they brought the home team back into the match. Fast bowler Dave Wesson struck a big blow in his first over, taking two wickets with only six runs on the scoreboard for the visitors. Terrence Webb then got into the act by taking two wickets of his own, the final one at press time being the prized scalp of Anguilla’s captain, Chaka Hodge, for a duck.
The CVI will look to get as many wickets as possible before stumps on Friday, which would give them a good chance at an outright win on Saturday, the final day the three-day match.
