Brief: Workbooks Free for V.I. Elementary Students

Aug. 26, 2007 — As one of her first official acts, the newly appointed education chief announced Friday that elementary school parents won't have to pay for their children's workbooks.
"No parent of an elementary child enrolled in a Virgin Islands public school will be responsible to pay for a workbook that is needed for their child’s education, effective Monday, Aug. 27, 2007,” Acting Commissioner Lynn Spampinato said in a release from the Education Department.
Spampinato, nominated by Gov. John deJongh Jr. to fill the slot, said the money for the workbooks was already in place and there was no reason to collect more from parents. She said she would make sure that funding would be available next year from either a federal program or from other education funds.
In making the announcement about the workbooks, Spampinato also urged parents to begin the school year by making sure their children adhere to the school uniform code. She said emphasis needed to be placed on education, not fashion.
"It is high time for the attention to be placed on the reason for the students being in school — the attainment of a good, quality education," Spampinato said.
