Aug. 16, 2007 — Top-level government officials will soon get an $18,000 raise, according to an executive order handed down Tuesday by Gov. John deJongh Jr.
The wage increase is only intended for commissioners and agency heads whose salaries were previously set at $97,000.
During budget hearings held over the past three months, officials repeatedly testified that they have had trouble luring qualified personnel to the territory because of the high cost of living and the government's comparatively low pay scale.
The raise will help to attract and retain qualified government officials and will keep the salaries aligned with those offered by the private sector, deJongh says in the executive order.
