Brief: Seminars Will Help Businesses Trade Globally

Aug. 16, 2007 — Business owners looking to enter the global marketplace will find guidance at a seminar set for Monday on St. Thomas and St. Croix.
"Strengthening Your Position in the Global Marketplace" will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon at Gertrude's Restaurant on St. Croix and from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Monday at the UVI Small Business Development Center at the Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The workshops are presented by Delegate Donna M. Christensen in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Commerce, according to a news release from Christensen’s office.
The workshops are aimed at small-business owners who have products or services of interest to consumers in the Caribbean region, on the mainland or around the world.
"This is the first in a series of seminars that we have planned with the Department of Commerce to show Virgin Islands business owners the basics of preparing themselves to look at markets beyond the Virgin Islands for the sale of their products and services," Christensen said, according to the release. "It will be a real how-to session, and we hope at the end of the series we will have a core of businesses who don't currently view themselves as exporters ready to enter the international marketplace."
Deputy Assistant Secretary Colleen Litkenhaus of the U.S. Commercial Service of the Department of Commerce from Washington, D.C., will address the seminars. Sessions include the viewing of a Department of Commerce film entitled "Going Beyond the Borders," a presentation on market-entry strategies by Jose F. Burgos of the U.S. Export Assistance Center of the Department of Commerce in Puerto Rico, a presentation on methods of payment and foreign exchange by Mildred Cifuentes of Banco Popular, a session on trade finance — especially on what is available through the Small Business Administration — by Carl Christensen and a presentation on Shipping and Documentation by a representative of Federal Express.
"I would like to encourage all business owners to consider learning more about exporting," Christensen said. "As the world around us changes, we in the Virgin Islands have to do more to keep our economy vibrant. You may not think of yourself as a potential exporter, but you just may be overlooking an important opportunity.”
