Volunteers Needed to Clean Up Red Hook Salt Pond

Aug. 12, 2007 – The Red Hook Community Alliance (RHCA) will hold a third cleanup of the Red Hook Salt Pond at 7 a.m., on Saturday, Aug. 18, as part of their Red Hook Salt Pond preservation effort. A grant award has been received from the Gulf of Mexico Community-based Restoration Partnership. Members of the St. Thomas community are needed to assist with the volunteer effort at the pond.
The grant is funded by the NOAA Community-based Restoration Program and the US EPA Gulf of Mexico Program. NOAA and the US EPA have interests in the ecological health of the U.S. Territories of the Caribbean as well as the Gulf of Mexico. The RHCA, a non-profit 501C3 organization, is partnering with the V.I. Division of Fish and Wildlife on this project.
Volunteers are asked to meet at the dirt road east of the Red Hook pond. They should wear long pants, work shoes, a long sleeved shirt and gloves. Water and trash bags will be provided. First-aid kits and hand sanitizer will be available. This cleanup is an important step toward prepping the pond for the installation of a boardwalk, viewing platforms and signage.
For further information, call RHCA President Andrea King at 344-2143 or visit the Web site at www.rhca.vi for updates.
