Police Make Arrests in June 15 Murder

July 27, 2007 — Police have arrested and charged two suspects with murder in the June 15 killing of 48-year-old Laurel Jeffers.
Sholome Francis, 21, of Estate Nadir and 18-year-old Edwardo Carmona Jr., no known address, were both arrested Friday. Carmona was already in custody after being charged with four unrelated offenses over the last five weeks, and was re-arrested and charged with murder.
Francis was arrested in the Nadir area without incident, according to a news release from the V.I. Police Department.
Jeffers, originally from Nevis, was found on Brookman Road at 12:55 p.m. the day of his death by a concerned citizen who had heard shots in the area. While transporting him to the Schneider Regional Medical Center, the citizen was involved in an automobile accident. (See "Police Have Identified June 15 Homicide Victim.") An ambulance eventually took Jeffers to SRMC, where he died of a single gunshot wound to the head, police said at the time of the incident.
Police Commissioner James McCall, in a release from his office, praised the work of both local and federal investigators and those in the community, who he said helped the law-enforcement agencies during the investigation leading to the arrests.
Carmona was charged at various times over the last five weeks with reckless endangerment, unauthorized use of a vehicle, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and third-degree assault.
