July 13, 2007 – Allison Peter, a member of the St. Croix Track Club and a student at the St. Croix Educational Complex, is having the best performance ever for a V.I. athlete at the IAAF World Youth Championships now being contested in Ostrava, Czech Republic, according to a press release from the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation.
On the third day of the competition she finished first in her 200-meter heat with a time of 24.35, a personal best. She advanced to the semi-finals, which will be run on day four. She ran personal best for the 100m with an 11.98 in the first heat where she finished third and advanced to the quarterfinals.
After having a successful year, as indicated by her performances in local meets and regional competition, Peter continues to improve as the competition gets stiffer. To make it to the WYC, she was the only V.I. athlete to make the qualifying standard (100m and 200m). Her potential surfaced a year ago when she won several medals in the Leeward Islands Youth Championships held in Nevis. She won those medals in spite of running on grass and with less than ideal lane assignments.
She is the daughter of Dalia and William Peter of St. Croix. She attended Church of God Holiness for elementary school, Seventh-day Adventist for a year of junior high school and is now a sophomore at the St. Croix Educational Complex. She is a member of the St. Croix Track Club and is coached by Mireille Smith, who is accompanying her in Ostrava, and Keith Smith.
