Boxing Champ Julian 'The Hawk' Jackson Honored

June 18, 2007 — The world of boxing honored Julian "The Hawk" Jackson on Monday, giving the V.I. native a permanent middleweight championship belt at a Catherineberg ceremony.
Jackson, a former World Boxing Association light-middleweight champion and former World Boxing Council middleweight champion, accepted the honor flanked by family, friends and the other local boxing legend, Emile Griffith.
Born on St. Thomas in 1960, Jackson won 55 bouts during his career — 49 by knockout — and lost six. Over the course of the 1980s and '90s, he represented the Virgin Islands in fights in Spain, Mexico and Ecuador.
He was inducted into the African-American Hall of Fame in August 2001 and the Caribbean Sports Hall of Fame that same year. He was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame on Oct. 14, 2006.
Jackson said in retirement he is still trying to make a difference in his community through the Amateur Boxing Federation, of which he is vice president.
"Through this boxing program, I am able to give back to the community that helped me to start my career," he said. "I'm from a small island in the Caribbean, yet I was still able to make the accomplishments I've made. The only limit to what you can achieve is what you set for yourself."
