June 13, 2007 – Gov. John P. deJongh Jr. Wednesday congratulated the delegates who were elected to the Fifth Constitutional Convention. The thirty delegates, elected during Tuesday’s Special Election, will be charged with crafting the fifth draft of a Virgin Islands Constitution.
“Among the delegates are many familiar individuals who will undoubtedly bring their wealth of experience to the year-long process of developing a constitution document which is inclusive of all people who call the Virgin Islands home,” deJongh said. DeJongh said he will be reaching out to the delegates to have a discussion about the direction that the process should take. “One key element will be to consistently and properly educate the public about what the final document represents before the electorate is asked to ratify this new governing document in October 2008."
This is our opportunity to write a constitution that expresses the will, the passion and the concerns of our people, we should seize the occasion, deJongh said.
