Police Substation in the Works for Red Hook

June 7, 2007 — Police services on St. Thomas will expand later this year when a new substation opens at East End Plaza, now under construction opposite the Red Hook ferry terminal, according to a Government House news release.
The managing member of East End Plaza, Ricardo Charaf, has provided space in the plaza for the development of the substation, Gov. John P. deJongh Jr. said.
“We are very happy to be able to provide this facility for the police department and for the benefit of the Red Hook community,” Charaf said in recent correspondence to Police Commissioner James McCall. The police substation will be ready for use in December 2007, the targeted completion date of the East End Plaza project.
DeJongh expressed his gratitude to Charaf for including the police department in the final plan of the new plaza.
“The thoughtful actions of Ricardo Charaf and East End Plaza, LLC, go a long way towards improving the services that can be provided by the men and women of the V.I. Police Department," deJongh said, according to the news release. "This type of public-private partnership is a wonderful step in the right direction. With cooperation like this from the public and the business community, we all win in the end.”
To the east of East End Plaza lies adequate space for the construction of an emergency-services center, deJongh noted. It could house an ambulance as well as components of the Fire Services and Police Department, and possibly an emergency heliport.
The VIPD has long sought a location on the East End that would facilitate increasing police presence, McCall said.
“This is a golden opportunity for the VIPD to achieve its goal of providing enhanced police protection to this community,” he said, according to the news release. The opening of the new police substation in Red Hook will coincide with the completion of two police classes this calendar year, McCall said.
“With the new officers on board, police administrators will have a more flexibility in scheduling officers at the new substation and at the four other police stations in the St. Thomas-St. John district,” he said.
