Lorraine Moorehead Is Running for Convention Delegate

June 7, 2007 – My name is Lorraine Moorehead, and I am a candidate asking for your vote to serve as a delegate to the fifth Virgin Islands Constitutional Convention. Since 1966 I have been a resident of these islands and have made them my home. All of my children were born in these islands and were educated in the Public School system and raised in the religious culture of these islands.
I have served the people of these islands by working in different departments of the government, including Health, at Knud Hansen Hospital, Finance, Social Welfare, now Human Services, and the Tax Assessor's Office, from which I retired, after more than 33 years of service. Presently I am employed at the Schneider Regional Medical Center as Executive Assistant to the Chief Financial Officer.
For more than 40 years I have witnessed the many problems and issues facing these islands and have watched the islands move forward and take increasing steps toward greater self government. I have seen these islands move from having the Governor and the Government Secretary appointed by the President of the United States to electing our own governor and lieutenant governor. I also saw the right to vote given to persons 18 years of age and older. These were major steps that moved the people of these islands forward in the march to grater self-government.
The 5th Constitutional Convention is another opportunity for us to advance the cause of self-government. It is a serious matter and we must not take the responsibility of governing ourselves lightly. It should not be a matter of electing the person that is the most popular but electing those persons who are truly concerned about the welfare and future well-being of these islands. I believe that I am such a person.
My different positions and responsibilities in government have prepared me well for the task of serving on the 5th Constitutional Convention. They have afforded me the opportunity to gain valuable insights into the culture and lifestyle of our people. I believe that this knowledge is critical in preparing a constitution that is truly reflective of the people that now live in these islands and those that will live here tomorrow. Our future is much too important to be left to chance. We need to elect people to serve as delegates who are dedicated and committed to these islands and who will take the bold steps necessary to insure that the rights of all Virgin Islands citizens are preserved and protected.
I am prepared to render such service. I ask your support and your vote on June12, 2007. I am Lorraine Moorehead No. 59 on your ballot.
