Jay Wiltshire Wants to Represent You at the Convention

June 4, 2007 – The Caribbean is an ecliptic blend of people, cultures, beliefs, and traditions. The US Virgin Islands may be viewed as an infusion of a highly diverse populous of migrating sons and daughters who claim these beautiful islands as their home. The USVI Constitutional Convention is an opportunity for US Virgin Islanders to serve their country. A true Virgin Islander is one who considers all five islands their home and the Caribbean as our paradise. It is therefore imperative that we as a people continue to contribute to the advancement of Caribbean people, specifically that of United States Virgins Islands citizens.
Good day to all, my name is Jay Wiltshire and I am asking for your support as one of the at large delegates for the United States Virgin Islands 5th Constitutional Convention. I was born February 7, 1971 on the island of St. Croix and had the opportunity to enjoy the natural benefits of all five islands, St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John, Water Island, and Hassel Island. Upon my graduation from St. Croix Central High School I registered for Americorps, a federal program dedicated to servicing the needs of the USVI community. It was at this junction I was able to witness and experience first hand the critical issues facing our people, specifically the elderly and young. I decided then and still believe that education is the key! I attended the University of the Virgin Islands on both the St. Croix and St.Thomas campus and graduated with a BA in Psychology and I am currently attaining my Masters in Education (Administration).
As a candidate, I offer my years of experience and academically acquired knowledge to that of a public servant, and plan to employ the position of delegate at large to the 5th Constitutional Convention as the vehicle in which to promote sustainable academic, social, and economic development of the US Virgin Islands. I believe the key to altering the negative conditions of the US Virgin Islands is to influence an atmosphere of change that is based on sound policy reform. Although there are many issues to be addressed, my concerns are that of benefits for the residents of the territory in areas such as health care, education, and other vital services. In addition, I would like to address the protection and preservation of US Virgin Islands culture.
According to Dr. Alma H.Young (1990), we must create a situation where Caribbean peoples can be more active doers- capable of defining problems, identifying friends and foes, setting goals and opening up channels to a better future. As an emerging society of residents, migrants, and tourists, the USVI should serve as an example of community empowerment. We must fashion our most valuable resource, our people, into model citizens, dedicated to the perseverance of our culture, history and ancestral traditions of the territory. It's time to change our act…vote! Feel free to contact me at Wil6016@uvi.edu…wiltshirejay@hotmail.com. Thank you.
