A Tribute to Attorney Alfonso E. Nibbs

Dear Source:
How do you measure an individual’s generosity of spirit? A person with great generosity of spirit would be characterized by his honesty and openness in sharing information, knowing that problems are solved this way and caring little about who received the credit. This individual would have a positive outlook on human nature in general, and display an attitude of collaboration and not competitiveness.
Attorney Alfonso E. Nibbs had tremendous generosity of spirt. He was uncommonly generous with his vast knowledge of the law and life and willing at a moments notice to share it, unselfishly, with patience and care. I had the great privilege of working alongside Attorney Nibbs during the construction of the legislation to reform the Government Employee Retirement System.
Attorney Nibbs carried the weight of all government employee’s retirements in his heart. Meticulously, he would go over every aspect of contribution requirements and benefits in force and actuarial assumptions and the changes which were necessary until my head would spin. And when I caught my breath, he would begin again without ever challenging my ability to grasp the severity of the subject or unwilling to repeat a section of the code. He was a fine teacher and I am honored to have known him. To his family, loved ones and staff, I pray that many happy memories will keep you with him always.
No man can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your own knowledge.
The Teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness.
If he is indeed wise, he does not bid you enter the house of wisdom,
but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind.
