Relay for Life Team Seeks Members; Next Meeting Set for May 31
UVI's Relay For Life 2007 team on St. Thomas is looking for students, faculty, staff and friends interested in becoming team members. Individuals who cannot participate are encouraged to make a donation or to buy a luminary commemorative candle. The 2007 Relay For Life event is scheduled for Saturday, June 23 and Sunday, June 24 at the Charlotte Amalie High School track. Online Registration Continuing for Summer Session, Fall Semester
Online registration for UVI's upcoming second summer session and the 2007 fall semester is in progress. UVI's online registration system, called BUCSS for Banner Utilization Central for Self Services – can be accessed from the BUCSS logo on UVI's home page – www.uvi.edu – or from this direct link. Registration for Summer Session II classes continues through June 20. Classes will begin on June 22.
SBDC Seminar on St. Thomas to Cover Grant Writing Basics
A seminar on the basics of grant writing will be offered by UVI's Small Business Development (SBDC) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The presenter is Bill Rohring of Environmental Impacts Management. The seminar is designed for the grant writing novice. Admission is $20. A $5 discount is available to those who pre-register. UVI Alumni on St. Thomas/St. John to Hold Recognition Breakfast June 2
The St. Thomas/St. John Chapter of the University of the Virgin Islands Alumni Association will hold its fifth Alumni Recognition Award Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, at the UVI Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. This year the alumni association honors those who have given voluntarily of their time, talent, integrity and resources to various segments in the community. Actress Regina King to Return for FUVI Celebrity Golf Classic
Acclaimed actress Regina King will return to the V.I. to participate in the Foundation for the University of the Virgin Islands third annual Celebrity Golf Classic, scheduled for June 28 – July 1 on St. Croix. King is perhaps most famous for her role as Margie Hendricks in the Academy Award-winning biopic "Ray," which chronicled the life of the great Ray Charles. She will join more than 20 actors, professional athletes and television personalities who are expected to convene on St. Croix for the fundraiser. Ceremonies to Honor Participants of SAT Preparatory Program
Individuals who successfully completed the Virgin Islands 2007 SAT Preparatory Program will be honored at ceremonies this week on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The SAT program is a collaborative effort between the Prosser-ICC Foundation and the UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center. Its goal is to help public high school students improve their Standardized Aptitude Test (SAT) scores. On St. Thomas, the ceremony is slated for 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. On St. Croix, the ceremony takes place at 5 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Northwest Wing on the St. Croix campus. For details, contact Apryl Gilliss at 692-4230.
St. Thomas Golden Key Chapter Earns Gold Status for 2006-07
The St. Thomas chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society at UVI has achieved gold status for the 2006-2007 year. Gold Status is the highest level available to Golden Key chapters. Andrea Hamm, chapter advisor, said teamwork among the group's executive officers and support from some 30 student members and other honorary members led to the achievement. St. Thomas campus chapter executive officers for 2006-2007 were Shenelle Donovan, Jennifa Mohammed, Alexia Mintos and Keridon Williams. For more information, contact Hamm at 693-1136.
Junior, Senior High Students Sought for Summer Enrichment Program
St. Croix students in grades nine through 11 are invited to apply for a UVI summer enrichment program in robotics and Netlogo. The program – called the Boosting the Intellect to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Institute – will run from June 15 through 28 on the University's St. Croix campus. Talented eighth graders may also be accepted. Applications are available at all junior high and high schools on St. Croix. The application deadline is June 1. UVI to Offer Short Course in Aquaponics, Tilapia Aquaculture
A six-day, short course in aquaponics and tilapia aquaculture will be offered by UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station from June 17 through 23 on St. Croix. The course, which costs $600 for V.I. residents, will provide in-depth knowledge of the principles and practical application of the aquaponic and biofloc tank culture systems developed at UVI. The course will include classroom lecture and hands-on field work. Participants will learn the technology involved, including fish handling, vegetable production and system operation. UVI Offers Summer Band Camp for Junior and Senior High Students
The UVI Music Department will offer a five-week, comprehensive summer band camp for junior and senior high school band students from July 2 through August 3. The application deadline is June 1. Applications for the camp are available from Prof. Austin A. Venzen at the UVI Music Education Building on the St. Thomas campus, from 10 a.m. to noon and 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. They are also available from school band directors. The application fee is $50 and the camp costs $250. Camp sessions will run Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Breakfast and lunch (or snacks) will be provided by the Department of Education's School Lunch Program. The camp is funded in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Law Enforcement Planning Commission. For details, contact Venzen at 693-1192.
