Topic of Conference Will Be Status of Caribbean Healthcare

May 22, 2007 – The University of the Virgin Islands, in collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic of Florida and the Virgin Islands Hospitals, was awarded an annual grant by the 26th Legislature to host a Caribbean Health Conference. The Caribbean Healthcare Conference 2007 will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Friday and Saturday, June 8 and 9, at Marriott's Frenchman's Reef and Morning Star Beach Resort on St. Thomas.
The aim of the annual conference is to strengthen regional cooperation in the delivery of healthcare services. It is intended for professionals, administrators and others interested in the delivery of healthcare services in the Caribbean. Speakers from throughout the Caribbean will participate in panels related to nursing, health care systems and the availability of access to healthcare. A registration fee of $20 is required. Limited seating is available and registrations will be accepted through May 31. One-day registrations will be accepted at a fee of $10.
The keynote speaker will be the Donna M. Christensen, a physician and delegate to Congress from the U.S. Virgin Islands. Her topic will be "Overview and Perspective of Current Healthcare Conditions in the Caribbean Island Countries." Dr. Christensen earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from George Washington University School of Medicine.
The forums will focus on determining the availability of technologies throughout the Caribbean region, identifying available resources for disease prevention, and the state of the healthcare workforce. As part of the conference, a reception and facility tour will be held from 5-7 p.m., on Friday, June 8, at the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Center on St. Thomas.
