Power Outage Delays Juniors' Basketball Game Indefinitely

May 21, 2007 — The V.I. Basketball Federation's territorial championships came to an abrupt end Sunday as a power outage at half time caused the postponement of the game between the Addelita Cancryn Junior High School and Central High School junior varsity boys' basketball teams.
The highly anticipated third match between the two teams got off to a slow start, with Cancryn jumping out to an early 12-7 first-quarter lead. Both teams' emphasis on defense, mixed in with a few early turnovers, resulted in the low first-quarter score.
Central High, unphased by their early deficit, started the second quarter on a 13-1 run to take a 13-20 lead. One of Cancryn's players made two free throws to cut the deficit to five, but Central High's size and athleticism on the offensive glass allowed them to get second and third opportunities and eventually push their lead to 10 with 2:50 left in the half.
Cancryn, motivated by their coach's encouragement during a time out, went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to one. Both teams traded baskets right before the half, and Central led 31-30 at the half. Cancryn ended the second quarter on an 11-2 run, using their quickness to get back in the game after falling behind by 10 points.
Unable to finish the game because of the power outage, both teams and tournament officials agreed to postpone the rest of the match until further notice. According to one tournament organizer, the tournament cannot continue until V.I. Basketball Federation president Usie R. Richards returns from off island.
In the other championship game of the day, the Alfredo Andrews Elementary School girls team took on their counterparts from Ulla F. Muller Elementary School. Both teams came in with something to prove in the final game of a best-of-three series between the two schools.
The second game of the series — held late Saturday afternoon — ended in controversy because of an argument over the final score. With the series now tied at one, spectators in the Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School gym were anticipating a down-to-the wire finale.
The game did not live up to expectations, however. By half time Alfredo Andrews had a 19-point lead which they didn't relinquish in the second half. Alfredo Andrews ended up pushing that margin to 27 points with a final score of 62-35.
Leading scorers for Muller were Germequa Bell with 19 points followed by Sheraine George with six points.
Leading scorer Kadisha Barry's brilliant play throughout the tournament carried the Alfredo Andrews team with 29 points. Following close behind was Kynara Sampy with 23 points.
During an earlier game, John H. Woodson Junior High School swept Addelita Cancryn 2-0 to claim the JV girls' championship on Saturday.
The three-day tournament, held at BCB's gym, was sponsored by the V.I. Basketball Federation and funded through the Law Enforcement Planning Commission.
