Virgin Islands Receives AmeriCorps Grant

May 14, 2007 – Lutheran Social Services on St. Croix has received a $1,247,517 AmeriCorp grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service, according to a press release from the Office of Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen.
The grant will support Project Reach Lutheran Social Services. The project's members serve as cottage parents for abused and neglected children at LSS operated homes. Members also provide direct care services to frail, elderly residents to enable them to live independently. This program's priority is child welfare, crisis intervention service for the elderly, and programs for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities.
AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages Americans in service to meet critical needs in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security and other human needs. Among other activities they mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, help communities respond to disasters, and recruit and train volunteers.
