Vikings Outlast Pesky 40 Plus Pirates 13-7

May 13, 2007 — The 40 Plus Pirates had their best showing of the Raphael Jackson AA Baseball league’s new season Saturday afternoon in a losing effort against the defending champions Vikings.
Although outhit only 11-10, the Pirates came up short in the end by a score of 13-7. No one can question the ability of the squad of veteran players to put runs on the board. Their Achilles heel, however, is their defense. On Saturday they got fairly good pitching efforts from starter Gary Malloy and relievers Malcolm McGregor and Cruz Soto, but they gave up too many runs on errors.
Batting first, the Pirates got in the scoring column right away. They plated two runs on a two-out, two-run single off the bat of Eustace Davis to take the early lead. Their defensive lapse, however, started in the bottom of the inning when they gave up four runs to the defending champs, with only one of them earned. That earned run came on an RBI single off the bat of Warren Brooks, and the Vikings led 4-2 at the end of one inning.
The Pirates came back to tie the game at four in the top of the second, plating two runs on an RBI single by Alejandro Rivera and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Gary Malloy. The champs, however, took full advantage of the Pirates' errors and generosity in giving them extra at-bats in the bottom of the inning. They scored five runs to take the lead for good at 9-4. Their five-run second inning was highlighted by a bases-loaded, base-clearing double off the bat of Tony Watts.
After a scoreless third inning, the Vikings plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 13-4 lead after the Pirates failed to score in the top of the inning. The Vikings scored four runs on a two-run single by Joseph Brow and RBI singles by Brooks and Christobal Encarnacion.
With the allotted game time of 2:45 now elapsed, the umpires alerted the teams that the fifth inning would be the last unless the Pirates came back to tie the game in the top of the inning.
The Pirates, showing some late fight, refused to go gently into that good night. They came alive in the top of the fifth, sending nine men to the plate, but they only managed to plate three runs to make the score a more respectable 13-7. The Pirates scored three runs on a two-run double by Enrique Soto and an RBI single by Rivera.
Arthur Canaii pitched the win for the Vikings while Malloy took the loss for the Pirates.
Top hitters for the Vikings were Tony Watts, 1 for 2 with three RBIs, while Brooks and Encarnacion were both 2 for 3 with two RBIs apiece. For the Pirates, Rivera was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Soto 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Davis 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Loreno Acosta and David Clarke both 2 for 3.
