May 12, 2007 – Senate Vice-President and Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Education, Culture & Youth, Senator Shawn-Michael Malone extended a very Happy Mother's Day to all mothers across the Virgin Islands.
"Historically, the Virgin Islands have been a matriarchal society. Here, we are usually fortunate enough to have more than one person who fulfills the motherly role. It's good to know that a village still raises a child," Malone said. "In today's world, mothers are called upon to serve in several capacities and still perform their normal household duties. It's truly remarkable what they do," he added.
"On this Mother's Day, I urge our community to salute all our mothers. Whether with flowers, food accommodations, other gifts or just a pleasant greeting, we should all take the time to pay our tribute to our mothers across the territory," Malone concluded.
