May 10, 2007 — Scores of would-be Constitutional Convention delegates have picked up applications to help shape the U.S. Virgin Islands' founding documents, but few have completed the process and turned them in.
Each district gets 13 delegates to the convention and votes on four at-large seats, two from each district.
The elections office in St. Croix has given out 73 nomination packets to hopeful convention delegates, and 18 at-large packets. St. Thomas has given out more than 55 and 10 at-large packets. In St. John, four packets were picked up.
And Elections office workers in both districts said prospective delegates are picking up more every day.
With just six days left to return the nomination packets, St. Croix has seen just 13 come back completed; St. Thomas has collected 18; and none have come back for St. John.
Elections Supervisor John Abramson Jr. said he wasn't surprised few have come back. "They'll pour in between Monday and Wednesday. We'll be inundated. I'm very sure of that," he said.
There also have been few new voters registering to vote for the Constitutional Convention delegates.
"We haven't seen a large influx. Nothing like we have when we have the general elections," he said.
The deadline to register to vote is May 16.
Anyone already registered to vote does not have to re-register for the Convention election.
The Elections offices are offering extended hours this week: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Abrahamson said.
