Harkins-Pierre, Parry Win Poetry Contest

April 27, 2007 – The winners of the First Annual Caribbean Writer Humanities Festival Open Poetry Contest were recently selected. The first prize was awarded to Patricia Harkins-Pierre for "The Wings of Moths and Hummingbirds," a tribute to renowned writer Opal Palmer Adisa. Barbara Parry garnered the second place prize for her "The Man Who Walks the Island," a celebration of our common humanity. Both winners are residents of St. Thomas.
In its continuing effort to promote creative writing in the territory and the region, "The Caribbean Writer" established this contest as an additional feature of the University of the Virgin Islands' Humanities Festival, an annual event that highlights and celebrates the robust humanist ethos of the Caribbean in language, literature, music, performance art and philosophy.
