Cindy Berne writes from Florida of all places, and suggests that all our woes would be solved by a 5% sales tax. Brilliant! Except that all our woes are not the lack of taxes (the 4% gross receipts tax more than makes up for 5% sales tax (do the math). Pouring more good money after the bad will do little but better line the pockets of those who are making off with the money already. Just a for instance: the VI Department of Education spends more per pupil than over half the states and yet, our children receive one of the worst educations possible. Substandard is a charitable term to apply to the abysmal state of education. Dedicated, underpaid teachers can only overcome so much. I could go on, but there is no point.
