St. John Man Arrested for Rape of Elderly Woman

April 25, 2007 — St. John resident Melroy Mathias, 42, was arrested at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday in connection with an April 19 rape of a 77-year-old St. John woman.
Police Department spokeswoman Shawna Richards said Wednesday that both Mathias and the victim live in John's Folly.
Mathias remains in Corrections Bureau custody after failing to post $75,000 bail set on first-degree rape charges.
According to a Police Department press release, the woman was asleep when Mathias entered her home. The police report indicated she struggled with the suspect, who then placed a pillow over her face and raped her.
The press release indicates the woman did not immediately report the incident because she was afraid. Richards said the victim made a police report April 21.
Richards said the report contained no information on Mathias' employment.
