Brief: VIPD Officer Under Investigation for Sexual Assault of a Female Minor

April 25, 2007 — A St. Croix police officer was placed on paid administrative leave in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a female minor.
Police spokeswoman Shawna Richards said Wednesday the incident was reported to police at 2:30 p.m. Monday from an "outside agency." Richards declined to name the officer in question, citing police union policy prohibiting the release of names of officers under investigation. As a matter of policy, the names of sexual assault victims are never disclosed by police.
Investigation into the matter is being conducted jointly by the VIPD Internal Affairs Unit and the Department of Justice, Richards said. The police officer has yet to be formally charged.
There is no new information on the case, Richards said, adding that details of the alleged sexual assault would not be made public while the investigation is ongoing.
Police Commissioner James McCall said Wednesday the investigation is continuing and urged members of the public who have any knowledge of the incident to contact the police department.
