Truck Scorched But Attempt to Burn Central High Failed, Police Say

April 20, 2007 — Vandals torched a pickup truck and attempted to set fire to Central High School sometime after midnight Friday morning, according to Police.
A 911 dispatcher received a call at approximately 2:30 Friday morning, said Shawna Richards, Police spokeswoman. Upon arriving at the scene, police and fire personnel found a burning truck.
“I believe the truck was set on fire,” Richards said. “That is preliminary, though. The incident is still under investigation.”
A second report of vandalism and arson came about 6 a.m. when cafeteria workers arrived to find damage in the school’s main office.
“Based on our preliminary investigation, it appears a rock was thrown through the window of the office and a person or persons involved attempted to throw gasoline into the offices and light it,” Richards said. “It didn’t catch, but apparently — and this is preliminary — there was an unsuccessful attempt to set the main office on fire.”
Police had no suspects as of late Friday afternoon. According to Richards, Acting St. Croix Police Chief Winsbut McFarlande has indicated that Police will conduct a series of initiatives over the next few weeks aimed at curbing vandalism in the schools. Because some of the efforts may be aimed at catching vandals, Richards would not immediately elaborate on what those initiatives might be.
