Here is a chronological log of the homicides recorded in 2007, with statistics broken down by island.

St. John resident Michael Freeman was shot and killed in a shootout between police and a carload of men. Freeman was a passenger in the car that police were attempting to stop.

Jovan Joseph, 24, of Anna’s Hope was stabbed in a attack by a group of four men near the children’s rides at Festival Village. He died later at the Gov. Juan Luis Hospital where he was taken after the incident. Police said shortly after the incident he died of a single stab wound.Two minors initially held on burglary charges were arrested January 12 in connection with the stabbing death of 24-year-old Jovan Joseph . A third minor was arrested a few days later. By law the names of minors charged with crimes are not released.

Glenn Blyden, 37, was killed after being stabbed in an incident that took place near the Lionel Roberts Stadium.

Calvin Nesbitt, 23, was killed after being shot and stabbed at the Marley Housing Community in Frederiksted.

Police Officer Ariel Frett, 52, died of multiple gunshot wounds when he was off duty and attempting to intervene in an altercation on Goat Street. He would have had 25 years on the force on Feb. 9. Police had a suspect in custody immediately after the shooting. The suspect was also shot in the incident. Jermaine Paris, 24, turned himself in to detectives of the V.I. Police Department’s Major Crime Unit on February 12, 2007. Basheem Camal Ford, who is Paris’ half brother was arrested shortly after the shooting. He was held at the Youth Rehabilitation Center (YRC) until he turned 18 in late January and then was charged as an adult with first degree murder.

Larry Rodriguez, 25, died of a gunshot wound to his left upper chest at the Mutual Homes housing community.

Joseph Vanholten, 34, was beaten to death. Police found his body covered with a sheet in the parking lot of the Lima Laundromat.

Eric Golden, 51, was killed in an altercation with a male relative at his Bonne Esperance home.

25-year-old victim Sandy Cruz, a native of the Dominican Republic, was killed during an armed robbery in the Bovoni area.

Recardo Rosa, 30, was shot and killed early Saturday morning while walking home from a Smith Bay-area nightspot with his friend. Rosa, a Dominican Republic native, and his friend were both robbed by two masked assailants and then shot and left for dead.

Julio St. Jean, 22, was shot and killed early Saturday morning at the Estate Profit Head Start Center after falling asleep while watching movies with his friend, a security guard at the center. The guard woke up at the sound of gunshots, but thought they were coming from the television and went back to sleep. He discovered St. Jean’s body about 6:30 a.m.

Paulino Remy, 19, of Kirwan Terrace, died early Friday morning of a single gunshot wound. At time of publication, Police did not know the time and location of the shooting. At 12:53 a.m., Police responded to a report of an assault victim coming to the Roy L. Schneider Hospital. Remy underwent surgery before dying of the injury.

Brendalee Melendez Belardo, 30, of Estate Campo Rico died of a single gunshot wound. She was found on Scenic Road and pronounced dead at the scene at around 8:45 a.m.

Dale O. Samuel, 53, died early Monday morning. Someone knocked on the door of his Smith Bay home about 1:33 a.m., entered and began firing, hitting him once in the back, Police said. His female companion ran to a back room and was not harmed.

Casroy Stevens, 30, died early Tuesday morning after getting shot once in the body outside his bar and restaurant late Monday night. The shooting occurred at 10:46 p.m. at the S&I Bar and Restaurant in Estate Grove Place. The shots came from a late-model green or black SUV carrying three males, according to Police reports.

The body of Samuel Fahie, 46, of Smith Bay, was discovered Wednesday morning in the vicinity of Lake’s Chicken Fry, the victim of an apparent shooting. Police were dispatched at 7:48 a.m. No further information was available to publication time.

Laurel Jeffers, 48, was shot on Brookman Road in the Mariendahl area around 12:55 p.m. After hearing the shots, a concerned citizen transported the victim — an unidentified black male in his late 30s or early 40s — to the hospital. While en route, the vehicle transporting the victim was involved in a car accident near Al Cohens Plaza. An ambulance then took the shooting victim to the Roy L. Schneider Regional Medical Center, where he died from what appeared to be a single gunshot wound, Police said.
Police arrested Sholome Francis, 21 and 18-year-old Edwardo Carmona Jr., both of St. Thomas, one month later. Carmona was already in custody after being charged with four unrelated offenses over the last five weeks, and was re-arrested and charged with murder.

Daryl Paris, 22, was walking from his home to a friend’s house when two male suspects shot him, according to Police reports. Officers were dispatched to the Thomasville Apartments housing community around 10:55 p.m. Saturday. They found Paris lying on the ground near the entrance to the community with multiple gunshot wounds to the body. Witnesses reported hearing more than 10 shots fired. Paris was pronounced dead at the Schneider Regional Medical Center at 12:05 a.m. Sunday.

James P. Cockayne, 21, died of multiple stab wounds at 1:10 a.m. the Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center. Cockayne was found with only faint signs of life in Enighed at 12:28 a.m. According to police he was from Philadelphia but had been residing on St. John. Kamal "Six Pack" Thomas and Ancelmo Boston were arrested for the killing in August 2007. Jahil D. Ward was arrested for his part in the murder June 2008

A 17-year-old male died after being shot multiple times in the back and head about 12:38 a.m. at the Walter I.M. housing community. A second victim of the shooting, a 21-year-old male, was recovering after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds to the abdomen. The victim who survived the shooting is the son of a V.I. police officer currently serving in Iraq.

Frenchtown resident Trevor Joseph was shot and killed in an attempted robbery. Joseph was servicing video lottery terminals at the Emerald Beach Resort when the incident occurred.

The body of St. Thomas resident Alvin Morton was found Saturday morning in the trunk of a car alongside Peterborg Road. He had been shot multiple times.

The burned body of Francis Augustus of Estate Castle Coakley was found in the charred remains of a vehicle on St. Croix. Police classified the incident as a suspected homicide pending further investigation.

Dexter Henderson was found with several gunshot wounds inside a green Suzuki Vitara. Police were called at 1:37 p.m. to the Gold Hill area near Frydenhoj Ballpark where they discovered the Vitara along with a Honda Civic that also had bullet holes in it.

Vickie Lynn Atkinson, 41, was found dead at Western Suburb cemetery. She was shot in the neck with a small-caliber gun.

Abijah Todman, 26, died at the Gov. Juan Luis Hospital sometime late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, from multiple gunshot wounds sustained in a gunfight in the road in front of the Gas-for-Less station at Diamond Crest Plaza at 10:46 p.m. Saturday.

Jeremy Rodriguez, 20, of LaGrange was shot several times in the face and abdomen in the Estate LaGrange area. Police responded to a call at 1:07 a.m. The victim was alive when police arrived at the scene. He died at 3:29 a.m. at Gov. Juan Luis Hospital.

Samuel Nova Valdez, 26, a native of the Dominican Republic, was gunned down inside Marlins Bar in Altona at approximately 4:59 p.m. Official reports said Valdez was shot multiple times after an altercation with another man.

Unidentified man found with multiple stab wounds Sept. 19 in a residence in Anna’s Retreat.

An unidentified man, later identified as Dennis Corraspe, died of a gunshot wound while in surgery at the Schneider Regional Medical Center. He had been shot in the abdomen in an incident at Megans Bay involving at least four other people –- two of whom were also injured. On Sept. 8, 2008 police arrested Joel A. Vicars 21, and charged him with First Degree Murder in connection with the killing. He was also charged with Felony Murder, First Degree Assault and Third Degree Assault.

Burea of Corrections Officer Davidson James, 37, died of multiple gunshot wounds to his head and body after being attacked at the gate of his home in the Smithfield area of Frederiksted.

20-year-old Anan Sealy died of multiple gunshot wounds. The shooting was apparently in retaliation for an earlier assault.

Carlos Aguilar, 52, died of two gunshot wounds to the back. He was shot Oct. 16 after pursuing a vehicle he believed was carrying property stolen from his East End home. Akeel Codrington, 19, was arrested on December 10 on charges of first-degree murder, weapons charges and possession of stolen property, stemming from a burglary and shooting Oct. 16 that resulted in the 52-year-old Aguilar’s death 10 days later.

Clerance VanBeverhoudt, 41, died of multiple gunshot wounds. His body was found in a grocery shopping cart in Hospital Ground.

Drew Randol, 27, of Christiansted was found shot to death in the Rosegate area.

Alston Smith, 22, died of a single gunshot wound to the head. He was shot up the street from Pine Peace Market after an apparent feud with another man turned deadly. Police have implicated Michael Steve Abraham, 21, but a first-degree murder charge against him was rejected during an initial court appearance.

Police discovered the buried body of a black male Dec. 4 while searching an area of the Bovoni Housing community for marijuana plants and stray dogs. The medical examiner determined the cause of death to be multiple gunshot wounds to the body.

A 60-year-old white male was found dead of apparent stab wounds after someone reported a robbery in progress in the St. Joseph and Rosendahl area of St. Thomas. Police took two suspects into custody the same day.

Saker H. Mohammed, 29, owner of EZ Grocery, was gunned down late in the evening in Hospital Ground. Officers responding to the scene found Mohammed, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, lying motionless next to his vehicle.

Police responded to reports of a man lying in a pool of blood in the Hospital Ground area. Ronald James Carty, 52, died soon after police arrived of a gunshot wound to the back of the neck.

Allen Burke, 18, of Anna’s Hope died of gunshot wounds during a shooting spree near Building No. 5 of John F. Kennedy housing community which left another man dead and four others injured.
Police Officer Jeffrey Browne and Luis "Gulio" Melendez, both St. Croix residents, were arrested December 10 with two counts each of first-degree murder, four counts each of attempted murder and four counts each of first-degree assault, along with weapons and ammunition charges for the murder of Alvin Burke and Kennyetta McIntosh. Browne was on sick leave from the VIPD for five months before the shooting, and since his arrest has been placed on administrative leave without pay.

Kadeem Leonard became involved in a physical confrontation at about 4 a.m. after a dance at Coral World. The altercation intensified and Leonard was stabbed. He died at the scene.
