Hummers, Anchor Dive, Claudio Enterprises Win Playoff Openers

March 13, 2007 — The Terminix Killer Bees were rudely welcomed to the Bob Owens slow pitch softball league’s playoffs when they took a 22-3 pounding from the National Guard Hummers Monday night at the D.C. Canegata Ball Park.
This game was over early, but according to the league’s playoff rules, all games must go seven innings — no matter how lopsided. The Killer Bees now find themselves in the losers' bracket of the double-elimination playoffs.
The Hummers, on the other hand, were ecstatic with their convincing win over Killer Bees after they had limped into the playoffs in unconvincing fashion.
Batting first, the killer Bees came up with one run on an RBI single off the bat of Gary Anthony. The Hummers responded with four runs on two two-run home runs by Dennis Carter and Francisco Nazario to take a 4-1 lead at the end of one inning.
After the Killer Bees failed to score in the top of the second, the Hummers extended their lead to 8-1, scoring four runs on a grand slam off the bat off Kai Schjang in the bottom of the inning.
The Killer Bees again failed to score in the top of the third, and the Hummers again were able to extend their lead to 10-1 after three complete innings.
The Hummers continued their offensive onslaught in the bottom of the fourth as they batted around, erupting for 12 runs to lead 22-1 after the Bees again failed to score in the top half. The onslaught was led by Carter who hit two home runs in the inning, three- and two-run shots.
Hummers ace Jerry Vialet picked up the win, while Rod Graci got the loss for the Killer Bees. Leading the Hummers attack at the plate were Carter (4-for-5 with three home runs and eight RBIs), Schjang (3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs), and Nazario (2-for-4 with one home run and two RBIs). For the Killer Bees, Debreaux was 1-for-2 with a home run and one RBI, and Anthony was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Anchor Dive 26, Divi 14
In the other playoff games, game one saw Anchor Dive overrun the Divi Carina Bay Dolphins, 26-14. Mario Simmonds got the win for Anchor Dive, while Roman Cruz picked up the loss for the Dolphins. Top hitters for Anchor Dive were Joe Phillip (4-for-4 with two home runs and eight RBIs) and Carmelo Torres (4-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs). For the Dolphins, it was Lebbeus Gittens (4-for-4 with a home run and six RBIs) and Juan Burgos (4-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs).
Claudio Enterprises 22, 40 Caliber 10
In Game three, Claudio Enterprises continued their hot play with a convincing 22-10 shellacking of 40 Caliber. Julio Carmona was the winning pitcher while Steve Nisky got the loss. The Claudio attack was led by Luis Moreno (3-for-4 with three home runs and seven RBIs), Ernecido Bon (5-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs) and Juan Santana (3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs). For 40 Caliber, it was Angel Torres (3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs), Sylvester Blake (3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs), and Luis Cintron (4-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs).
