March 7, 2007 – A certification program designed specifically for the hospitality industry is already facing expansion. Originally developed for licensed taxi operators, the Taxi and Tour Certification program now encompasses individuals with a desire to become certified tour guides.
The next session of the six-week certification program will be held from 6-8 p.m., starting Tuesday, March 13. The training will cost $250 and includes materials. Taxi and tour operators will be educated on customer service, V.I. history, culture, points of interest and presentation skills.
Students are required to pass a 100-question exam and put the presentation skills acquired in class to use in order to receive certification. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate of completion and a certification identification card. Graduates of the program are eligible for membership in the Certified Taxi and Tour Guide Association.
The program was developed by the University of the Virgin Islands’ Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center and is endorsed by the USVI Hotel and Tourism Association and the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association.
