Valerie Capers Jazz Trio Coming to Tillett Gardens April 4

March 5, 2007 — Multi-talented pianist Valerie Capers will bring her jazz trio to the territory April 4 in a show at Tillett Gardens.
Born in New York City, Valerie Capers received her early schooling at the Institute for the Education of the Blind. She went on to obtain both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Julliard School of Music, and became the first non-sighted person to graduate from that conservatory. Proficient in both the classical and jazz idioms, she is a composer, a professor and has even conducted at Carnegie Hall.
Capers has appeared with her trio and ensemble at colleges, universities, jazz festivals, clubs and concert halls throughout the country and in Europe. As a jazz artist, she is most often heard in New York City at the Knickerbocker in Greenwich Village. As a classical soloist, she has also performed Mozart’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, No. 23 at the Pepperdine University Center for the Arts in Malibu, Calif. Artists with whom Capers has performed include Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Ray Brown and Tito Puente.
Her trio consists of Capers on piano with John Robinson on bass and Earl Williams on drums.
As with all of the performers included in this season’s concert series, the Valerie Capers Trio will do a student-outreach program hosted by Charlotte Amalie High School, with student transportation funded by the West Indian Company, according to a news release from Arts Alive.
The concert will take place at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 4. Tickets are $30 or $66 for the prix fixe dinner including gratuity; reservations are recommended. Tickets are available at the Tillett Gallery or in Ridvan Studio at Tillett Gardens from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. For more information or to make reservations, call 776-8566 or send an email.
This engagement of Valerie Capers is a V.I. Presenters Initiative project, a partnership between the V.I. Council on the Arts, funded by the Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment of the Arts Regional Touring Program, the news release said.
