Gittens Walk-off Homer Terminates Killer Bees

March 6, 2007 — Lebbeus Gittens of the Divi Carina Dolphins blasted a three-run walk-off homerun in the bottom of the eight inning Monday night to beat the Terminix Killer Bees 9-7 in a battle of the Bob Owens Slow pitch softball league’s cellar dwellers.
The win assured the Dolphins a second-to-last finish, just ahead of the Killer Bees who secured last-place with the loss.
Divi Carina came up with one run on an RBI single by Juan Acevedo in the bottom of the first inning to lead 1-0 after one.
Terminix erupted for five runs in the top of the second on a grand slam homer by Gary Anthony and an RBI single by Jason Helimar, to take a 5-1 lead at the end of two.
The Dolphins were able to tie the game at five in the bottom of the third after the Killer Bees failed to score in the top of the inning, scoring four runs on two two-run blasts by Juan Burgos and Gittens.
After a scoreless fourth, the Bees took a 6-5 lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI single off the bat of Tom Bozzo. The Dolphins, not to be outdone, tied the game at six in the bottom of the inning on an RBI sac fly by Burgos.
After both teams failed to score in the sixth and seventh, they went to the eight with the game still tied. The Bees briefly took the lead in the top of the inning at 7-6, picking up a run on an RBI single by Bozzo. This, however, set the stage for the late-inning heroics of Gittens, who hit the first offering from Killer Bees pitcher Rod Graci over the center field fence for the game winner.
Roman Cruz pitched the win for the Dolphins, while Graci got the loss for the Killer Bees. Leading the Dolphins attack was Gittens, (2-for-4, two home runs and five RBIs), and Burgos (2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs). For the Killer Bees, the big bats were Tom Bozzo (3-for-4 with two RBIs), Jason Helimar (3-for-4 with one RBI) and Anthony (1-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs).
