Writing Project Accepting Applications for Summer Institutes

March 1, 2007 — The Virgin Islands Writing Project (VIWP) will be welcoming two new co-directors as it prepares for its fifth Summer Institute to be held at UVI's St. Croix campus from June 25 to July 19.
According to a UVI release sent Thursday, VIWP is a partnership between UVI, the National Writing Project and the V.I. Department of Education and is based on a model of "teachers teaching teachers."
The Summer Institute provides a setting for participants to share successful classroom practices, develop their own writing skills and study current research in the teaching of writing.
Fenella Cooper, a teacher at Charlotte Amalie High School , and Sharon Charles, a teacher at the Lew Muckle Elementary School , replaced the founding co-director, Amy Roberts, who recently resigned.
According to the release, Cooper’s primary responsibility is to revive and coordinate the activities among the teacher consultants in the St. Thomas/St. John district.
This year’s Summer Institute will be preceded by an Advanced Institute on June 19 to June 22. There will also be a Young Writers Camp for 20 elementary students, which will meet July 9-19. The VIWP works with teachers to improve the quality of writing among teachers, as well as among students.
For an application to any of the institutes and/or the Young Writers Camp, or for more information about the VIWP, call or email any of the following individuals:
–Valerie Combie, 692-4126, vcombie@uvi.edu
–Sharon Charles, 778-286, sharonpcharles@hotmail.com
