Historical Society March Meeting and Walking Tour

Feb. 28, 2007 – The St. John Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, March 13, at the Bethany Moravian Church Hall. There will be a short business meeting followed by a very special presentation by Society historian Elroy Sprauve. He will be speaking on "English Creole, A History of the Spoken Word on St. John."
Sprauve is a member of the board and an expert observer of language development on St. John. He taught both English and Spanish at the Beacon school, is a member of the Virgin Islands Cultural Institute, and was a founding board member of that group. The public is invited.
Also in March, the Society will explore the diverse historical landscape of Estates Great and Little Lameshur Bay. The activity will begin at 10 a.m., on Saturday, March 17, and will be a full day of learning and fellowship. The day's activities will kick off with a leisurely walking tour through the ruins at Little Lameshur and a visit to the historic estate house led by SJHS President David Knight. After the walk the group will head over to the V.I. Environmental Resource Station (VIERS), where Randy Brown of Clean Islands International Inc.–the non-profit environmental organization that currently manages the site–will provide lunch and refreshments, as well as a tour of the facility and a presentation on his organization and its mission. After lunch, the group will embark on another short walk with Knight along the Yawzi Point Trail, where the early history of Estate Great Lameshur Bay will be discussed.
Don't forget to bring your bathing suit. There will be no charge for lunch, but in order for the folks at VIERS to plan appropriately, sign-up is required. If you would like to join us for lunch a sign-up sheet will be circulated at the March meeting, or you can contact Margie Labrenz at 693-8808.
