Bumann Takes Inaugural Time-Trial Win

Feb. 25, 2007 — A new race course was christened on Sunday. The results, however, were old hat. Robert Bumann took the first ever Ha'Penny to Divi Carina Bay Resort individual time trial in his typical, dominating style.
The 9.5- mile route featured calm winds and cool temperatures, which are rare in V.I. cycling. The course has been held in the reverse direction for years, and is among the favorite of local riders, thanks to its flat sections and howling tail winds.
Bumann bested Juancito Gario by 2.5 minutes to grab his fourth win in a row. Chavis Lunceford was 17 seconds further back in third.
Statesider Alec Kloss beat another visitor, Swiss rider Andi Dill, by two minutes to take the Expert category. Kloss time of 23:59 was so outstanding, he would have placed second in the Elite division. Alex Betancourt, a local rider returning to racing was third, 90 seconds in arrears.
The Sport division showed why time trials can be exciting, as Edwin Cruz and Mathias Sampson tied for first in 29.37. David Nowack was 30 seconds out in third.
The women featured first-time winner Kathy LaGrange, who ended Heidi Snow's winning streak, finishing just two seconds ahead in 31:26. Denise Blanchette was third in 32:43.
The next event will be the Hyundai East End Sprint and Try-A-Tri triathlons, which will be held on Sunday, March 4, at Divi Carina Bay Resort.
