Feb. 16, 2007 — TRAXCO and the St. Croix Racing Commission have outdone themselves with the race card they have put together for this Agricultural Fair weekend races on Sunday.
The card features nine well-matched races that will undoubtedly parlay into an exciting day at the Randall Doc James Racetrack.
The biggest of all, and probably the most anticipated race, will be the eighth race, the days feature at 1/1-16 miles for a purse of $6,000.
In that race, Kentucky Kris (118) returns to the big island to prove that his last time on St. Croix — last years Thanksgiving Day races, when he destroyed the field in that feature by some eight lengths — was no fluke.
He was matched up in that race with top St. Croix thoroughbred in Carson Secrets, and the two dueled head to head, out in front of the field until they approach the 3/8 marker.
This was where Carson Secrets (118) apparently bolted and was never in the race after that. This led to speculation that the pressure placed on him by Kentucky Kris was too much for him to handle and he just threw in the towel at that point.
Carson Secrets, however, came back to win impressively in his last outing on Jan. 28, and his owner/trainer Stanley Acoy attributed that performance to new blinkers, something he did not have for the last matchup with Kentucky Kris. Also in that race will be St. Croix's other top thoroughbred, Gallego (118).
Gallego won his last outing in December and is a big closer. He will be hoping that another duel develops between Kentucky Kris and Carson Secrets on the front end, which would set things up for his late charge. Also hoping to make a late charge will be the other entry from St. Thomas, Gins Dancer (116), who closed well to finish second to Gallego in December. The final entry in the five-horse field will be Zerocs (116) making his debut in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The jury is still out on him.
