Feb. 16, 2007 – The St. Thomas Historical Trust announced the appointment of Luanne Melchior as its executive director. She received her Bachelor of Arts as well as her Master of Science from Michigan State University, and she has held various positions in the private and public sectors of education, human resources, criminal justice and project management, both in the territory and on the mainland. Since her return to the island five years ago, Melchior has been instrumental in bringing an innovative program to the island that has positively affected youth. It is that same forethought and vast experience the Trust welcomes within the organization.
When asked about her appointment, Melchior said, "Thus far every position I have held has prepared me for this particular position. Working with the St. Thomas Historical Trust will be a most worthy endeavor. My goal as executive director is to generate increased community interest as well as to develop national interest in the mission and vision of the Trust. Undoubtedly, when we take measured steps to restore and preserve our history, we leave an indelible imprint as to who we are as a people; we are a community of people deserving of celebration, recognition and remembrance."
This year The St. Thomas Historical Trust is planning several initiatives that will seek the support of all community members. In accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between the National Park Service and the Trust, it has made Hassel Island the focus of its 2007 fundraising efforts. Hassel Island has remained an unrecognized national and international treasure for far too long.
"In order to be successful as an historical trust the persons who make up the organization cannot do it alone, cannot operate in a vacuum. Throughout the year the Trust will call on the community to become involved in preserving their own history. All residents are encouraged and invited to become a member of the Trust. The history we save will be our own," she said.
The Trust is currently establishing new educational outreach programs.
